Opportunities at the Fitz

Spooky Scene Dating

Scene Dating is an initiative from the Old Fitz Theatre team designed to foster collaboration, creativity, and community. It brings together actors, directors, and writers to rehearse and perform short scenes live on the Fitz stage - all in one day, Tuesday 28 October. And since it's Halloween month, this edition of Scene Dating is hitting the stage with a spooky seasonal twist.

Once you’ve submitted your details using the form below, successful applicants will be matched with: a writer and a scene (if we don’t have enough writer submissions, we’ll assign material from our scene database), a cast, and a director.

You’ll receive your script via email if you're selected - but we’re keeping your collaborators a surprise until the day itself, to keep things fresh and spontaneous!

Due to time and capacity constraints, we may not be able to include everyone this round. You’ll be notified by Friday 24 October if you’ve been selected to participate.

Scratch Nights

Welcome to Scratch Nights at the Fitz - our mini showcase evenings where makers can test out ideas, explore new directions, and experiment with works-in-progress in a supportive environment. ***BONUS POINTS if your piece has a spooky twist - we’re embracing the Halloween vibes this year!***

We’re inviting creatives to share pieces between 10 and 15 minutes long - perfect for trying something new in front of a warm and welcoming audience. Scratch Nights will run over two evenings, taking place in our Late Night slot after Fitz Happens, starting at 8:45pm

These evenings are all about keeping things simple and low-footprint - just bring your work-in-progress, the people you need to present it, and get it up on stage with a basic lighting state. If you need sound, feel free to bring your own portable speaker. No bells and whistles, and no rehearsal time - just a chance to share and experiment.

And don’t miss the extra buzz on Thursday night! After the performances, we’ll be announcing the Play in a Day themes and artist groups - so stick around and get ready for the excitement.

Play In A Day

Play In A Day is an exhilarating creative challenge - definitely not for the faint-hearted! Playwrights have just 14 hours to write a brand-new 10-minute play, after randomly drawing their theme and collaborators from a hat. The freshly written script is then handed over to the director and actors at noon the next day, who have only a few short hours to rehearse before bringing it to life on stage that very evening. It’s a whirlwind of imagination, collaboration, and adrenaline - theatre-making at its most spontaneous and thrilling.

If you're up for a wild ride, please fill in the form below. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

THE SCHEDULE:

  • ~9.45pm Thursday 30 October: playwrights draw a theme to write to and the names of their collaborators from a hat, at the conclusion of Thursday night's Scratch Night event.

  • 12pm Friday 31 October: all artists to meet in the Bistro at the Old Fitzroy Hotel. From this point onwards, teams will be allocated a time to rehearse in the theatre for ~30-60 minutes each.

  • 5pm Friday 31 October: theatre to be clear of any Play In A Day teams in preparation for Fitz Happens.

  • 8.15pm Friday 31 October: all artists to meet in the Pool Room at the Old Fitzroy Hotel, and together enter the theatre, facilitated by a Fitz representative.

  • 8.45pm Friday 31 October: Play In A Day showcase kicks off in the theatre!

Sign up to the Old Fitz Theatre's Artist Database

Accessibility and transparency of opportunities is at the forefront of our minds when it comes to all things Fitz. As a result, we’ve launched the Old Fitz Theatre's Artist Database - a place for artists to have their work seen by teams who present work at the Fitz. The aim of this is to make it possible for a larger pool of artists to be considered for opportunities, and for teams to have a larger pool of talent to draw from to cast and crew their shows.
